Why oceans matter?

“The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul.” ~ Robert Wylan

Oceans are vital to life on Earth and here are some reasons why we need to save them.

  • Phytoplankton are tiny plant-like organisms that live in the sea and act the same way as the leaves of a plant. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen and hence, are responsible for at least 50% of oxygen on earth.
  •  Oceans regulate the earth's climate by absoring huge amounts of heat from the sun. The currents transport warm water from the equator to poles and cold water from poles to tropics. They even regulate rain and draught.
  • The ocean is also home to an abundance of life and supports an incredible biodiversity.
  • A range of fish, crustacea, algae and sea plants are a source of food for billions of people around the world every day.
  • Oceans contain vast quantities of minerals such as salt, limestone, potassium and magnesium.
  • It also creates millions of jobs in the fisheries sector, followed by tourism.
