Why mountains matter?

“The mountains are calling and I must go.” – John Muir

Mountains are  loved for their beauty. They have captivated climbers and artists for centuries. Why mountains matter to our ecosystem?

  • Host a range of biodiversity which is the  key to our planet’s survival. The forests found in mountain ecosystem  play a vital role in regulating the regional climate by  increasing  the air quality and reducing erosion.  Many animals such as snow leopard, tahr, red panda, yak, monal etc depend on the mountains.
  •  Important food crops such as maize, potatoes, barley, quinoa  and apples grow in mountains.
  • Provide 60 to 80% of earths fresh water. This water is vital for drinking, domestic use, irrigation and in the production of hydropower.
  • Commodities such as coffee, cocoa, honey and spices are produced by the local communities  which boost the economy.

Hence, mountains are a sustaining wealth of the world. Presenting a few beautiful and majestic mountains.
